Olympique - Ivory
in GIFs

If you weren’t a cool smoker yet, look how elegant and satisfying and tragic and dandy Olympique and their team make it look. Just like smoking (caution, questionable metaphor upcoming), the song itself seems meh at first, but then it grows on you and eventually it becomes hard to stop listening.

One crappy Instagram picture of GERARD at Palaverama Festival, Gmünd, 1 August 2014 (plus a bonus romantic incident involving a GERARD BAG at U3 Volkstheater, Vienna, 4 August 2014)
I didn’t bring my Gerard bag with me to Palaverama. It was a lovely evening anyway, but the loveliest things happen when I am carrying it. Case in point:
Yesterday, as I was waiting for the U3 at Volkstheater, a guy tapped me on the shoulder and showed me his smartphone with the Blausicht album playing on his Spotify. Then he gesticulated towards my Gerard bag, said “Hi, I couldn’t help but notice…”, and afterwards he asked for my number.
Did I ever write about how it was Gerard and Nvie Motho who first introduced me to the term “bumpfist” and how I initially thought it was called “bampfi”? When I told this guy I wasn’t entirely available at the moment, as his U3 going in the opposite direction came into the station, he said “too bad” - I said “great taste in music though” - and then we fistbumped.

Hinterland - Heid geh i alla ham

I don’t know. I’m not really into the new Hinterland tracks and I assume it’s got to do with my tastes changing (because I can’t really detect a major change in Hinterland’s sound). At least there’s a Patrick Swayze reference.

A couple of crappy cellphone pictures of mostly the crowd during the BILDERBUCH show at Palaverama Festival, Gmünd, 1 August 2014

Please excuse the crappy pictures in which you can’t even really see the band. But as you know, it is not our number one priority to make nice photos. It is our number one priority to go on roadtrips to small countryside festivals with great line-ups and enjoy ourselves with our friends.

So you will have to make do with these photos showing mostly the Gmünd crowd (and maybe a hint of Peter and Maurice somewhere) and know that these moments captured weren’t even the best moments because in the best moments, we were too busy shouting Bilderbuch lyrics at each other.

One crappy cellphone picture of SIR TRALALA & THE GOLDEN GLANDERS at Popfest 2014, 26 July, Vienna, TU Prechtlsaal
Again a picture of a gig in TU Prechtsaal. It was really hard to stay longer than 10 min there even though windows were open and all. Here you can see Sir Tralala & The Golden Glanders. I even managed to take two pictures: One with shirt on and one with shirt off. The latter is the chosen one, because it fits TU Prechtlsaals Venue-Situation perfectly.

We’ve all just recovered from the wonderful, wonderful sauna that is the Prechtlsaal during the Popfest but here are more concerts to feel gross and sweaty at.

One crappy cellphone picture of DER NINO AUS WIEN at Popfest 2014, 26 July, Vienna, TU Prechtlsaal
Nino started (I think) 40 minutes late, which was good. Otherwise I would have missed Nino’s musings on life, which are worth seeing and hearing every time.

One crappy cellphone picture of ROTIFER at Popfest 2014, 26 July, Vienna, TU Prechtlsaal
So, this is Rotifer. My memory does not serve me well at all on this gig. I guess it was just a quick step in between toilet and Innenhof. Really - the heat was quite unbearable.

Klangkarussell - Symmetry

Klangkarussell, the two DJs spearheading the Soundcloud sax house trend whose project name I almost never get right (which of the consonants are double consonants?), have finally released a full album, via Universal Music no less.

The next time Klangkarussell are playing a DJ set close to Austria is on August 1st. If you live in Southern Austria and fancy a little roadtrip, why not head to Schengenfest in Ljubljana?

One flary cellphone picture of HOLY OXYGEN at Popfest 2014, 26 July, Vienna, Seebühne
I think it’s safe to say that Holy Oxygen was our Popfest 2014 highlight. Here are my unedited drunk notes from Saturday night:
"Something about downloading mp3s and M.C. Escher and ‘it’s a party time’ and ‘internet, internet’ and ‘oida ur viel kohle grad’ / It’s nice to see people enjoying themselves on stage so much / I want to wear sunglasses at night too"

One crappy cellphone picture of KIDS N CATS at Popfest 2014, 25 July, Vienna, TU Prechtlsaal
We basically just went inside the TU Prechtlsaal during the Kids N Cats gig to shoot a cellphone picture. From what we saw, it was an entertaining, artsy show but the Innenhof just seemed more appealing temperature-wise.

A brass section does make everything better. Also, can anyone explain to me why Tagträumer and Julian le Play and The Makemakes are on heavy Ö3 rotation but Effi isn’t? The name “Popfest” has never been more appropriate than when Effi was on stage.

One crappy cellphone picture of NAZAR at Popfest 2014, Vienna, 24 July 2014
Waiting for Nazar was a bit dull. I was hoping for a collaboration set of the announced artists (Nazar, Yasmo, Blak Twang), but instead everybody performed after each other. Nazar was definitely the highlight of these artists. Anyhow Nazar finally showed up for 3 or 4 songs, which were pretty good. The Karlskirche in the background really makes the atmosphere of every gig at the Seebühne unique.

Okmalumkoolkat - Holy Oxygen

This collaboration between Okmalumkoolkat, The Clonious and Cid Rim is a high point for all y’alls playlists of Songs Featuring Lines About Butts.

Okmalumkoolkat is playing Popfest Wien on July 26 at 21:30 (Seebühne)

Farewell Dear Ghost - Fade Out (“In Bed with” session)

I’ve always enjoyed formats such as the Blogothèque Concerts à emporter, the Black Cab Sessions or the Subway Sessions, but ever since this type of online performances made it to the German-speaking countries it’s hard to keep track with all the places you can now see bands doing their special performances. Rooftops, couches, beds - everything can be a stage in its own way. However, I wouldn’t mind snuggling a little with the four guys of Farewell Dear Ghost right there!

Farewell Dear Ghost are playing some more shows in Austria (Salzburg, Wien, Acoustic Lakeside, Palaverama) and Germany in July and August - check their tourdates here!
