Ja, Panik und das Wasserkocher-Bratgerät (Konspirative Küchenkonzerte)

During one of my regular typing-Ja,-Panik-into-YouTube’s-search-bar sessions to find out whether there are any videos I hadn’t watched yet, I found this.

Ja, Panik | Zwischen 2&4

The European Rich Kids - Schwarz gelbes Unterseeboot (Die Türen Cover)

Rote Raupe: WAS IST DAS GEWICHTIGERE IN DER WAAGSCHALE, MUSIK ODER PERSÖNLICHKEIT?

motor: Puh. Allumfassend tolerant seid ihr also nicht?
Andreas Spechtl: Nein nein, aber Tiere, Tiere haben wir gern.

Wien, du bist ein Taschenmesser (acoustic) - Andreas Spechtl

Andreas Spechtl talks with somebody who never mentions his name or radio station (or other media)about the Tatort, Egypt, manifestos, realness faken, Angela and Nicholas, working and living together and die Traurigkeit.

It is really long and not always interesting but it is more interesting than translating manuals.

One crappy cellphone picture per band, Ja, Panik, Donauinselfest Wien, June 24th 2012
The rumours about one band member having left the band had been running wild and then we saw Thomas, vor der Bühne herumschleichend, two minutes before the concert started. And so we began speculating about the immediate consequences, i.e. Nevermind. If they’d play it, how they’d perform it if they played it, what they’d do about Thomas’ verse, would Andreas Spechtl sing all of the verses, the way it is on the album, would he just take over Thomas’ verse, would they shorten the song?*
It was a very compact set, starting with one big hit (Marathon) but leaving out quite a few others. I just looked at the set list again and they did play a lot of hits but some personal favourites were missing. Oh well. Andreas Spechtl seemed a bit overwhelmed by playing the guitar and singing all the time (some Thomas parts were also compensated with the piano), and at times the concert seemed like a compulsory affair that needed to be done to get some bills paid. There were some highlights, e.g. the unusually playful piano during Pardon that gave the song a much more joyous feel. The Body Count cover seemed like a very odd choice at first but by stretching the chorus to as long as it takes to walk across the whole FM4 area, the songs very simple message got one to five additional layers, making it much more ja, panikesque.
It was one of their weaker concerts but instead of focussing on that and speculating about the short or long term implications this line-up change (that might as well be temporary! Who knows!), I’ll just remember the dozen other, different concerts I’ve attended.

Four GIFs and a sentence per music video:
Ja, Panik - Ob ich das verdiene?

In the video for the song that gave us lines like “Das ist kein Alltag, das ist ein Päckchen Gauloises” or “Das ist nicht Mama, nicht Papa, das ist ein Mollakkord”, the boys are at Bandprobe while Mr. Spechtl is busy doing what he loves most (panieren), and then they have panierte Kreuze, Reisepässe and Pornoheftl with heroin shots as dessert.

klumpengeist:

Ja, Panik - Als habe ich…

There’s a Ja, Panik video we had not posted until now.

Ja, Panik über Manifeste, Plattenbau-Lofts, Heimat and possibly other things but I didn’t manage to watch until the end because this show is just trying too hard and it’s painful.

Für den nächstbesten Dandy (Die Heiterkeit) - Ja, Panik

The second Nein, Gelassenheit is the Die Heiterkeit/Ja, Panik split EP, where they cover each other. You can download it on soundcloud or buy it on vinyl. In case you don’t know Die Heiterkeit, Staatsakt describes them as “Die Heiterkeit aus Hamburg. Lakonischer Indierock drei junger Damen irgendwo im Wasteland zwischen Pavement und Hildegard Knef.” and almost all of these criteria are highly valued in the walzerkönig offices.

I don’t really have to say anything about the Echo because I didn’t even know that it was a thing that happened recently. I mean, we’re all too cool to care about awards like that, right? But apparently Modeselektor won the Kritikerpreis and Ja, Panik weren’t allowed to be nominated. Schluchtenscheißerdiskriminierung!!!! Except not because Boy were allowed to get nominated. Anyway, the whole thing sparked an interesting spex article about citizenship and pop production and a bad pun about Ja, Panik on facebook so I come out on the positive side of things.
